What is K-pop?

K-pop means Korean pop music. It is a style of music that comes from South Korea. K-pop is known for its catchy songs, amazing dance moves, and colorful music videos. It mixes many music styles. Some of these music styles are hip-hop, rap, R&B, and electronic dance music. K-pop also has groups with many members who sing, rap, and dance together as a team. Every part of K-pop is carefully planned. The singers (or idols) on stage train for many years before they become stars.

The Beginning of K-Pop in South Korea

K-pop began in the early 1990s. Before that, most Korean music was slow and traditional. This changed in 1992. A group called Seo Taiji and Boys performed on Korean television. Their music mixed Korean words with American music styles like hip-hop and rock. The youth people in Korea loved it.

This performance started a new wave of music in Korea. It showed that Korean pop could be fun, modern, and different. Seo Taiji and Boys became very popular. After them, new entertainment companies were created. The three biggest were SM Entertainment, YG Entertainment, and JYP Entertainment.

These companies found young people with talent. They trained them to sing, dance, and perform. They also created the first K-pop groups. These early groups included H.O.T., g.o.d, and S.E.S. This time period is now called the first generation of K-pop. K-pop began to grow inside Korea. Later, it spread to other parts of Asia. It became a full entertainment industry.

The Process of Becoming an Idol

Becoming a K-pop idol is not easy. Many idols train for years before they debut. The journey begins with an audition. This is when someone sings, dances, or raps in front of staff at an entertainment company. If they pass, they become a trainee

Trainees practice every day. They take classes in singing, dancing, rapping, acting, and speaking foreign languages like English and Chinese. They must always act kindly and dress well. They must also follow strict rules. Training is hard. Some people train for five to seven years. Many never debut.

Some trainees also join survival shows. These are TV programs where trainees compete to be in a new group. Fans and judges vote for the best trainees. The winners debut as a group.

Famous survival shows include Produce 101, which made groups like I.O.I and Wanna One; Sixteen, which created TWICE; I-LAND, which created ENHYPEN; and Girls Planet 999, which created Kep1er
